CHAPTER 15

Liz had a great view from one of the upper balconies of the power plant as she searched for any signs of Mike and Ted or approaching goblins. So far, she had seen no sign of either. She was starting to get worried; Mike and Ted were taking an awful long time. Maybe something had happened to them. Who knows what could have been lurking up in those woods.

As she looked around, she heard a strange barking sound that grew louder until it sounded like a huge pack of dogs were going crazy. Liz tried to find the source of the barking, but she couldn’t see anything. Then, a sudden burst of flames across the river caught her attention.

As Liz watched, Mike and Ted burst out of the woods and sprinted across the road followed closely by a small group of short, armored men.

A flood of small, scaly creatures pursued them. “Kobolds,” Liz breathed.

Seeing the guys in trouble, Liz turned back into the plant and shouted. “Jack! Darrell! Get the truck! Kobolds are chasing Mike and Ted across the bridge!”

Jack and Darrell were still on the ground floor making plans with Jim on how to best defend the plant. At Liz’s announcement, Jack and Darrell took off out of the door without a word. “Jim!” Liz shouted. “Get the gate open for them!”

The order was unnecessary as Jim was already speaking into his shoulder radio to tell Dave to open the gate.

Seeing that things were moving along, Liz turned back to the balcony and saw that Mike and Ted had crossed the old bridge and the other men were almost across with the kobolds close behind. Liz pulled up her rifle and found the leading creatures in her scope.

She took a deep breath and squeezed the trigger.

There was a puff of pink mist as three kobolds disappeared from Liz’s scope view. She quickly worked the bolt and reloaded the rifle. Liz heard Jack’s truck start up as she found a new target in her scope. Liz squeezed the trigger again and more kobolds died. She reloaded and was lining up for a third shot when the ground began to shake.

She reached out and had to hold onto the railing to stabilize herself as the quake worsened. Pipes rattled and shook inside the plant and Liz could hear men shouting to each other inside. She hoped the quake wouldn’t damage anything or hurt any of the workers.

A few seconds later, the shaking subsided and Liz watched as Darrell drove the truck toward the gate with Jack standing in the back holding his large machine gun.

Mike and Ted were running hard and were almost to the gate when it slowly began to open. As it opened, Darrell roared through the opening and Jack fired Ol’ Bertha into the oncoming kobold horde. Bullets tore into the mass of creatures and cleared some space between the kobolds and the armored men.

A few of the kobolds decided to try and scale the fence, but Liz quickly shot them off.
